- Apple's New Macintosh Systems Have Industry-leading
- Price/Performance, Studies Show
-
- Ingram Labratories cites Quadra 605, 610, 660AV, LC 475 , and
- Performa 475 for capabilities exceeding the competition
-
- CUPERTINO, California--November 11, 1993--According to the results of
- a leading independent tester of personal computers, many of Apple
- Computer Inc.'s newest Macintosh computer models outperform
- comparably priced DOS systems running Windows 3.1.
- The tests, conducted by Ingram Labratories, found that a cross-
- section of Macintosh computers exceed the performance of comparable
- PCs running Windows. Ingram conducted tests designed to simulate
- "real world" use of personal computers, by measuring the time needed
- to complete a set of typical functions across a variety of popular
- applications.
- "This study shatters any lingering myths about how competitive
- Macintosh is in terms of price and performance. The industry's leader
- in technology and ease of use--Macintosh--is now available at prices
- comparable to other systems. And as our most recent introductions
- prove, we plan to remain aggressive in our strategy to gain market
- share by offering high-performance systems with superior technology
- at competitive prices," said Ian Diery, executive vice president and
- general manager of Apple's Personal Computer Division.
- The Ingram study found the following:
-
- -- The Macintosh Quadra 605, LC 475 and Performa 475 with 25 MHz
- Motorola 68LC040 processors outperformed--by up to 16 percent--an
- entry-level Windows computer based on an Intel 80486sx processor
- running at 25 MHz.
-
- -- The Quadra 610 and 660AV with 25MHz 68040 processors outperformed a
- Windows computer based on an Intel 80486dx processor running at 33 MHz.
-
- -- The Quadra 650 with a 33 MHz 68040 processor exceeded the
- performance of a Windows computer based on an Intel 80486dx/2
- processor running at 50MHz.
-
- -- The Quadra 840AV with a 40MHz 68040 processor topped the
- performance of a Windows computer based on an Intel 80486dx processor
- running at 50MHz--and was close to the performance of a Windows
- computer based on an Intel 80486dx/2 at 66MHz.
-
- Outstanding price-performance
- The Ingram "benchmark" tests results combined with the latest third-
- party street price information (the price which retailers actually
- promote product) shows that many Macintosh models offer outstanding
- values, even without taking into account the additonal features that
- are standard on a Macintosh but cost extra on most Windows PCs.
- Specifically, the Macintosh Quadra 605 was priced like a 25MHz
- 80486SX, but ran 16% faster. And it includes features that cost extra
- on a standard PC, such as easy to use SCSI expansion connector,
- built-in networking, and advanced sound. The Macintosh Quadra 660AV
- was priced like the top of the line 33 MHz 80486DX models from the
- major PC brands, but includes the extra Macintosh features listed
- above plus video capture and output, telecommunications, speech and
- Ethernet as standard. Adding all of the AV system's features to a
- typical PC could cost more than $2,000.
- A total of 57 tests were conducted, running 9 applications: Microsoft
- Word, WordPerfect, Aldus PageMaker, Microsoft Excel, Lotus 1-2-3,
- Microsfot PowerPoint, Aldus Persuasion, Adobe Illustrator, and Claris
- FileMaker Pro. The comprehensive test suite included standard
- functions such as opening a file, recalculating a spreadsheet and
- sorting a database.
- Computers tested by Ingram included the Macintosh product line, and
- representative computers from leading companies including Compaq,
- Dell, NEC and AST.
- Headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ:
- AAPL) develops, manufactures and markets personal computer, server,
- and personal interactive electronic systems for use in business,
- education, the home, science, engineering and government. A
- recognized pioneer and innovator in the information industry, Apple
